CHAPTER 08

“Hey, we should go out on a lunch together!” Maribel said to Thomas, as both of them sat sipping coffees on the sofa at Thomas’ house. “Don’t we already do that?” Thomas replied, confused about Maribel’s suggestion. “I know, but we have never taken our kids with us. I barely get to see your daughter. I would like to spend some time with her too.” Maribel said. “Right. I haven’t seen your son at all. You have yet to introduce me to him you know.” Thomas said. “Yes, and I can do so on that lunch date.” “Agreed. Let’s do it. Pick a time and place and let me know.” “Perfect. Let it be this Saturday.” Saying this, Maribel got up from her seat and walked back into the kitchen. Thomas followed her, with a coffee mug in hand. “You don’t need to wash that you know.” Thomas said, as he leaned against the kitchen door. Thomas watched as Maribel walked to the sink, and stared to rinse her mug. Maribel always did that, despite Thomas’ insistence for her not to. There was always help around in Thomas’ house that would do chores like that. Thomas had expected that since Maribel would have been raised with servants doing all her household chores, that she would not know how to do simple tasks like that. But Maribel had so far stunned Thomas. She was rather different from what he had expected from someone of her class, and Thomas liked her all the better for it. “I know.” Maribel replied, as she dried the mug with the towel before placing it on the mug stand. “I better be going now.” Maribel said, as she dried her hands on the towel as well. She then picked up her satchel which was lying on the island, and then made her way out of the kitchen. Once again, Thomas followed her outside. “I can see myself out, by myself, Thomas. You don’t need to follow.” Maribel said. “I know, but I choose to.” Thomas said, and flashed Maribel a smile. Maribel felt butterflies flutter in the core of her body, like a teenage girl’s whose crush had just noticed her. Feeling that Thomas might notice the rush of red that was blushing her cheeks, she turned her face around immediately to hide it. She then walked over out of the house, to the driveway, where her sleek black car stood, shining under the harsh sunlight. “Goodbye!” Maribel called out to Thomas. “Bye, let me know about lunch!” Thomas replied back. Thomas smiled to himself as he observed Maribel’s car drive out of the driveway. All Maribel did was make him smile nowadays anyway. It did not take even an hour for Maribel to text Thomas back with an address and time for lunch. It was at this kids’ friendly restaurant that Thomas often took Samantha to, and Joseph too when he had been well. Joseph would have to sit out this date too, now that he was in no way fit enough to spend much time outdoors.
